Manual
1. Getting started
Install Polypage from the Chrome Web Store and click its icon in the toolbar to open your bookshelf. Everything starts there: your books, settings (the gear icon) and your account.
Settings that apply to every book — dictionary sources, translation and text-to-speech services, cloud import — live in the bookshelf settings, in the Dictionary, Translation, TTS and Import tabs.
2. Adding books
- Drag and drop files — or a whole folder — onto the bookshelf.
- Use + Add Book to pick files or a local folder.
- Import from Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or a WebDAV server (Settings → Import).
Supported formats: EPUB, PDF, MOBI / AZW3, FB2, TXT, and comics (CBZ / ZIP, CBR, CB7). DRM-protected files can't be opened.
Book files are stored only in your browser on this device. If you use sync, a book added on another device appears with a dashed “Book file not linked” cover — use Reattach file on that card to connect your own copy of the file.
Organizing
- Switch between grid, list and title-only layouts, and sort by date added, title or last read.
- Add tags to books and browse them like folders with Filter, which can also filter by reading status.
- Use Select books (in the menu) to tag or delete several books at once.
- The Recently read strip at the top keeps your current books one click away.
3. Reading
- Turn pages with the arrow keys, the mouse wheel, or by clicking the left / right side of the page.
- Choose single page, two-page spread or scrolling, and adjust font, size, spacing, margins and theme from the reader settings.
- Japanese books written vertically open in vertical mode automatically, with right-to-left page turns.
- Immersive mode hides the toolbars until you move to the edge of the screen; Focus mode adds a reading timer.
- Parallel reading opens a second book next to the current one — useful for an original and its translation.
4. Selected text: highlight, translate, look up
Select text to open the selection toolbar. You can also right-click the selection and use the Polypage menu.
| Action | What it does |
|---|---|
| Highlight | Pick a pen style and color. Click a highlight later to change it, adjust its range, add a note or delete it. |
| Translate | Shows a translation of the selection in a popup. |
| Dictionary search | Looks the selection up in your dictionary sources (see below). |
| Look up on Wikipedia | Opens Wikipedia in your browser's language — handy for names, places and historical terms. |
| Default TTS | Reads the selection aloud. |
| Share card | Makes an image card of the quote that you can save or copy. |
5. Inline translation
Turn on inline translation from the reader toolbar to show a translation under each paragraph. Only the pages you actually read are translated, and results are cached on your device.
Choose the service and target language in Settings → Translation. Google Translate works without a key; for Microsoft Translator or DeepL, enter your own API key (usage is billed to your account with that service, not by Polypage).
6. Dictionary sources
Settings → Dictionary holds the list of sites used by Dictionary search. Each source is a URL
with {query} where the selected word goes (and optionally {lang} for your
browser language). Each source can:
- Open in a new tab — simplest; works with any site.
- Open in a card popup — shows the result over the page. Needs a small parse script that picks the useful part of the page. Turn on browser rendering for sites that build their content with JavaScript.
You can also set book languages for a source so it's only used for books in those languages — e.g. an English dictionary for English books and a Japanese one for Japanese books.
7. Text-to-speech
Start reading aloud from the reader toolbar; the sentence being read is highlighted and pages turn by themselves. Choose the service in Settings → TTS:
- Browser — free, uses the voices available in your browser and operating system.
- Google Cloud or Microsoft Azure — more natural voices with your own API key.
A voice matching the book's language is picked automatically. In Japanese books, furigana is skipped so the text isn't read twice.
8. Highlights, notes and export
- Add notes to highlights, sticky notes to pages, and a free-form notebook per book.
- Find everything again from the reader's sidebar, with search and filters by color and type.
- On the bookshelf, open a book's More menu to export its annotations as Markdown, plain text or JSON, or to import annotations — including backups from Moon+ Reader, ReadEra and Readest.
9. Account and sync
An account is optional. Sign in from Settings → Account to sync your library list, reading positions, highlights, notes, bookmarks, notebooks and settings between your devices. Book files, covers and API keys are never uploaded.
Sync is free during the beta. After launch it's planned to become part of a paid plan, purchased through the upcoming Android app; anything stored on your device stays usable either way.
10. FAQ
Where are my books stored?
In your browser's storage on this device. Removing the extension deletes them, so keep your original files.
Can I read books bought from Kindle or other stores?
Only if the files are DRM-free. Polypage doesn't remove copy protection.
Why does a book show “Book file not linked”?
It was synced from another device. Use Reattach file and choose your copy of the file on this device.
How do I contact you?
